This INERME online seminar explored innovative approaches to teaching mathematics within economics programmes, highlighting practical strategies, curriculum design, and the use of new tools to support learning in quantitative subjects.
Speakers
Panagiotis Giannarakis (City St George’s, University of London) – Teaching Mathematics to Economics Students at Scale: Diagnostics, Design and Engagement
Discussed the redesign of a large first-year mathematics module to support cohorts with diverse mathematical backgrounds. The session highlighted the use of diagnostic testing, inclusive curriculum design, and scalable support mechanisms such as blended learning resources and peer-supported learning.

Alex Savu (Loughborough University) – Levelling the Playing Field: Trialling Adaptive Learning in a First-Year Mathematical Economics Course
Presented the use of the adaptive learning platform ALEKS to support students with varying levels of mathematical preparation. The talk explored how personalised learning paths and knowledge checks can help students progress at their own pace while reflecting on the benefits and practical considerations of implementing adaptive learning tools.

Presented findings from a pulse survey on how academics are adapting assessments in response to GenAI, discussing emerging practices, policy variation, and challenges with AI detection tools.

Yidi Sun (University of Manchester) – Integrating GenAI in a Postgraduate Economics Course
Reported on a pilot project embedding GenAI into assessment design, highlighting issues around transparency, student preparedness, critical thinking, and GenAI literacy.
